Change Acceptance, the First Step in Change Management
Are you totally happy with your life? Do you think you have achieved all that you had set out to achieve? Do you think you are currently performing to your optimum potential? If you answer all the above questions in a negative, answer one more - Do you wish for your life to be any different tomorrow than it is today? If you answer this in affirmative, change may be what you are looking for.
It is an oft repeated saying that if you are not getting the results that you wish for, you must make a change and take on a new direction. The simple rationale for this is, if you know that the current path is not taking you in your chosen direction, it is better to choose a different one, the one which would probably take you closer to where you want to be in your life.
But, very often we see people around us moving in their life, in the directions which do not take them where they wish for. Why is it so? Deep down these people know very well that they need to change in order to get different results. But, instead they resort to complaining, embitterment, negativity, addictions and even creating havoc for themselves and others around them. They do not do that one thing, which can make them feel better about themselves...CHANGE.
Let us explore reasons why people go to such limits to refuse to accept change:
- Change Does Not Ensure Success: No steps taken for success can ensure that success would be the sure-shot outcome. No matter what precautions are taken or how much effort is given success cannot be assured. This is the biggest reason why people fail to accept any change. Every effort in the direction of success brings equal possibilities of failure too.
- Change Means Stepping Out of Comfort Zone: The comfort zone is your area of control. It is the familiarity, which makes it most comfortable to be in. Any change means that effort has to be made to move away from what may be well-known, and move into the unknown. This is clearly uncomfortable and even terrifying for people even if they are not happy with their current situations.
- Change is perceived to be Complicated and Demanding: Change is unknown. Stepping into the realm of unknown is always perceived to be difficult by the human psyche. It is also seen to be problematical and one that may involve large amount of efforts. Most people resist the idea of change because of the complexity and efforts that are supposed to be involved in it.
- Change Involves Tough Decisions: Most people do not wish to make decisions in their lives. They may convince themselves that they are good decision makers and project an image, to match it too; but the reality is very different. They actually try not to make any decisions regarding creating change in their life paths. The easiest way for them to avoid taking decisions is to make excuses. You find such people making excuses all the time for why their lives turned out the way they have.
There is another great saying, which goes as – “The biggest enemy of a great life is good life.” This seems to be applicable for most people who are producing good results for themselves in their current jobs and other areas of life. The next question is targeted to all the people who are reasonably successful in their present lives - If they wish to produce truly spectacular results do they need to create some changes in their practices?
Read some motivational materials, listen to some good tapes or CDs, watch some remarkable films, move your thoughts towards excellence, try to remember how and when you accepted “good” instead of “great”. Ponder over these valid points and see if you too need to take the first step of acceptance for change to actually create any further changes in your life.
